Sustainable Development

SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS MODEL

The pursuit of a sustainable business model has been at the heart of our strategy for decades, placing GRS ahead of game. The clearest practical evidence of this is in our efficient recovery and reuse of material resources, and our seamless, end-to-end freight solutions that minimise material handling and empty miles, while maximising lower-carbon rail and marine transport.

Sustainability is already core to our vision, mission and values and, as GRS has expanded, our strategic acquisitions and joint ventures have all contributed towards becoming a truly sustainable business.

PLANET, PEOPLE, PRACTICES

Today our approach to sustainable development goes far beyond the established business practices that have delivered efficiency and great value to our customers. That’s why our strategic approach to sustainability now reflects the globally recognised ESG principles – Environmental, Social and Governance.

We have adapted these and termed them ‘Planet, People and Practices’ with strategic goals, substantial investment and measurable targets and progress in all three areas. Our approach supports 8 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

OUR ROADMAP TO NET ZERO

The effects of climate change are all around us. The UK has set its sights on reaching net zero carbon by 2050, and the actions we take now and over the coming years will determine whether we succeed.

The team at GRS has been galvanized into action and through a far-reaching set of initiatives we have developed a credible roadmap with a stretch target to reach net zero by 2040 for our Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and 2050 for Scope 3 emissions.

CIRCULARITY SOLVED

GRS has long pioneered the sourcing and supply of recycled and secondary aggregates as an efficient alternative to newly-quarried primary aggregates.

Often the most effective solution to achieve the desired performance and specification is a blend of primary, secondary and recycled aggregates.

People at the heart of everything we do

GRS has grown to become largest business of its kind in the country thanks to the dedication of our 800-strong workforce who are known for ‘going beyond’ for colleagues and customers alike.

That’s why our first strategic priority is to be number one for people. We put a huge amount of effort into making GRS a place where people want to excel and develop their careers, but also a place where they can be themselves, where they want to spend time, where they’re looked after and where they flourish.

GOOD GOVERNANCE

As GRS has expanded its business activities, the Group has strengthened its focus on robust governance and alignment with market best practices.

Throughout the organisation, from board level to our sales and operations teams nationwide, we have sought to maintain high levels of transparency and accountability to ensure that good governance is embedded within our working culture.
